THE CROWN Estate is the latest organisation to pledge support for West Highland Yachting Week , Scotland’s second largest regatta that runs from 30th July to 6th August 2010.
The Crown Estate is supporting West Highland Yachting Week as part of a wider programme to promote sailing on the west coast, which offers major economic benefits for coastal communities. As well as funding a wide variety of projects through its Marine Communities Fund, The Crown Estate has invested in pontoon and onshore facilities at Tarbert and Tobermory, one of the venues of West Highland Yachting Week. The Crown Estate, through its licensing scheme, also plays the lead role in managing the provision of mooring space for the Scottish Boating Community.
Paul Bancks, Coastal Manager (Scotland) said: ‘West Highland Yachting Week is an excellent opportunity to promote the huge tourism benefits that sailing offers to coastal communities. The Crown Estate is contributing by investing in pontoon and onshore facilities, which not only attract tourism but also provide facilities for local boat owners.’
Joint Regatta Chairman Dave Waltho said: ‘We are delighted to have The Crown Estate involved once again. We feel our event is closely allied to the ethos of the organisation with a strong community involvement across the board. We look forward to working with them in 2010.’
Meanwhile entries are building for this famous event with interest from all over the UK.
With a wider range of classes on offer to both CYCA and IRC handicaps, the event has even greater appeal for 2010.
The Joint Regatta Committee that runs West Highland Yachting Week has been planning the courses for both the Tunnock’s and Argyll Fleets with the Argyll fleet taking in some new marks racing off Tobermory.
Two races are again planned for each day the Tunnocks spinnaker fleet race separately both off Oban and Tobermory. The passage races follow much the same format as previous regattas.
Tobermory Single Scotch Whisky has recently added its support to West Highland Yachting Week and there will be several associated events run on Thursday when the fleet is in Tobermory.
Tunnock’s and The Oban Common Good Fund also sponsor West Highland Yachting Week with help also from BP Marine and West Coast Motors.
