Tobermory Distillery

Tobermory Single Malt Scotch Whisky, a sponsor of the event, is hosting the mid-week prize-giving for West Highland Yachting Week that takes place from 30th July to 6th August this year. The prize-giving will take place in the courtyard on Thursday August 5 where prizes for races from Sunday to Wednesday inclusive will be awarded. Following the prize-giving a ceilidh courtesy of Tobermory Distillery will be held in macGochan’s Bar.

Meanwhile racing marks off Tobermory have been decided for the Argyll white sail fleet.

The start will as normal be off the north end of Calve Island with a rounding mark to the north west of Calve. The fleet then racing to Sron Beag, Ardmore Point and Quinish Point. The course then heads east of Ardnacross Buoy to the Morvern Shore and back to the Green Isle (Eilean Glasa) in the Sound of Mull. Race Officer for the Argyll Fleet Phil Preston said that another mark W may be added if wind conditions suited.

‘The new course just outside the Sound of Mull suited the fleet last year and there were favourable comments so we have introduced a similar race this year. It gives greater variety for the Argyll fleet than just racing down the Sound of Mull making it more interesting and giving more points racing points of sail,’ he said.

Meanwhile the Tunnock’s spinnaker fleet race over a wide area from Sorne Point to An Acairseid Bay and Mingary Bay to Rubha nan Gall with Olympic style courses.

Race Officer Malcolm MacGregor said he planned two races for the day, wind conditions permitting. The race back to Oban on Friday from Tobermory sees the class sequence starting at 0900 hours. As well as Tobermory Whisky, Tunnock’s and the Oban Common Good Fund are sponsors of the event.

West Coast Motors is again helping to provide transport between venues and sponsors the Double Decker bus with the Oban High School Pipe Band playing around Oban on Monday August 2 prior to the Skippers Reception. This is being held at the Oban Ferry Terminal and is kindly hosted by Caledonian MacBrayne.
