West Highland Yachting Week celebrates its 63rd birthday with the regatta week running from 30th July to 6th August 2010.
Supported by Tunnock’s, the Oban Common Good Fund, Tobermory Single Malt Scotch Whisky and Caledonian MacBrayne with West Coast Motors also helping out with transport and BP Marine with fuel, the event is shaping up to give wider appeal this year for both spinnaker and white sail fleets with a wider range of classes on offer.
The introduction of another IRC Class 3b for boats rating 1.026 and below complements the CYCA Class 3a for CYCA handicaps 11-13.75 minutes.
This adds on to Class 1a for CYCA handicaps 10.75 minutes and below and Class 1b for IRC handicaps 1.027 and above, both racing under Pennant 1.
Restricted sail boats race in Class 2, Class 4 and Class 6. The full range of divisions is available on the Notice of Race now available to download from the website.
One Class 8 boat that this year celebrates a 41st birthday is Scintilla of the Sea. Marian Austin’s beautiful Northney 34 is not only well known to all at West Highland Week but throughout the west coast where she is cruises with family aboard as well as competing in a raft of local regattas.
Always to the fore in the results, last year Marian and her all girl crew on Scintilla had match racing at West Highland Week. In what became known as the battle of the Northneys, Andy Marjoribanks’ Northney 34 Streaker came through to win the day with Scintilla a very respectable second in class.
West Highland Yachting Week is famed for its après sail social scene and the onboard Class 8 parties during the week are somewhat infamous! For Scintilla’s 40th birthday a cake was duly baked and carried aboard to be sampled by Class 8 competitors when the fleet was in Tobermory. Marian said it was fitting that the celebration should be at one of her favourite events and she and her team are all very much looking forward to racing Scintilla at the 2010 event.
Meanwhile Oban Marina on Kerrera has confirmed that music will be provided by the well known local band Chunks for the Sunday evening headline event at the marina boatshed. Prior to this the Clyde Cruising Club Centenary dinner will be held in the shed where an anticipated 500 guests will be entertained. Sue Deacon, manager at Oban Marina said she was looking forward to welcoming all guests and competitors for all events being hosted by the Marina. ‘We look forward to seeing all our friends and some new ones for West Highland Yachting Week 2010.’
