Wide variety on the ‘Apres Sail’ scene

West Highland Yachting Week’s après sail social programme for West Highland Yachting Week from 30th July to 6th August 2010 is shaping up well. An integral part of the event, WHYW has always provided a wide range of excellent entertainment after a hard day’s racing.

This year there will be plenty for competitors to unwind to starting with the opening blast at the Lord of the Isles at Craobh Marina. On top of a wide selection of food available all day and to suit all tastes there will be dancing to a top local band on both the Friday and Saturday evenings. The oyster, champagne and seafood bar is back by popular request with special WHYW dinners in the restaurant in the evening.

Add to this the skirl of the pipes from the Mid Argyll Pipe Band and fireworks to round the night off and Craobh is again set for a spectacular launch for the start of WHYW. The music continues on Sunday with popular band Chunks providing the entertainment after the first feeder race at Oban Marina. Dancing at this headline event takes place in the massive boatshed and follows hot on the heels of the Clyde Cruising Club Centenary Cruise. Great food and an array of choice from the ever popular Waypoint Grill will be enhanced this year with a selection of spit roast fare provided by the newly established Oban Spit Roast company.

Extra ferries are being laid on till late with a connecting bus service provided by West Coast Motors to Dunstaffnage Marina and other areas in the town.

Not to be outdone, there will be a range of excellent entertainment and food at the Wide Mouthed Frog at Dunstaffnage Marina, music and dancing at The Ceilidh House in Oban and the usual top spots in Tobermory. The social whirlwind continues right through to the final headline prize-giving ceilidh in Oban at the Corran Halls which will again be with Craigendarloch.

The Touch Rugby competition, Oban Sailing Club Barbecue, swimming and cinema nights are already in place giving a choice of activities for all the family during the week.

The prize-giving for the feeder races will be held at the Skipper’s Reception hosted by Caledonian MacBrayne at the ferry terminal in Oban with the mid-week prize-giving in Tobermory hosted by Tobermory Distillery which will follow the Open Day on Thursday. Tobermory Single Scotch Whisky is the newest sponsor for West Highland Yachting Week and the Distillery will be hosting an Open Day on Thursday when the fleet is in Tobermory.

The final night’s prize-giving will be in the Corran Halls in Oban prior to the ceilidh dance.

The event celebrates its 63rd anniversary in 2010 and is sponsored by Tunnock’s, the Oban Common Good Fund and Tobermory Whisky with support from Caledonian MacBrayne, BP Marine and West Coast Motors.
