SKERRYVORE will play the Ceilidh House on Monday at Tennents West Highland Yachting Week that takes place from July 31st to August 7th 2009.
The popular band from Tiree has in previous years entertained competitors at Macgochans in Tobermory and is guaranteed to be a huge crowd puller with their lively traditional Scottish music.
Prior to this the feast is at Oban Sailing Club with the early Barbecue Party for everyone and there’s a chance to work off those tasty burgers with Inter Yacht Tag Rugby at Oban and Lorne Rugby Club – a fun event for every yacht to enter.
Meanwhile Oban High School Pipe Band is out to entertain Oban at various locations playing from the open top West Coast Motors double-decker bus. The band then heads to the CalMac ferry terminal to pipe guests into the Skippers’ Reception, an invitation only event. This is a chance for skippers to meet and enjoy complimentary drinks and canapés as well as joining in the farewell toast to Tennent’s.
The ever popular inter-yacht five-a-side football and family swim night takes place on Tuesday evening after racing. And the headline event on Tuesday night is at the Wide Mouthed Frog at Dunstaffnage Marina. Here a whole range of children’s activities and family fun is planned from mid-day with a buffet, roast wild boar and live music central to the evening. Neil McLauchlan of Dunstaffnage Marina said ‘We want to see Oban as a festival destination and events like West Highland Yachting Week can provide a springboard for a carnival atmosphere throughout the town and beyond.’
This year transport to and from Dunstaffnage and Oban will be made easier with West Coast Motors providing a double decker bus to allow competitors to travel in style!
All will make a fitting start to the 62nd regatta Week and the 30th and final year of sponsorship from Tennent Caledonian Breweries. This year Tunnocks also step aboard to support the event as do Argyll and Bute Council, Caledonian MacBrayne and The Crown Estate. BP Marine also help with the supply of fuel to the committee boats.
Tobermory holds a special place in the hearts of competitors and as well as the feast of entertainment in the village they can enjoy dancing at the Aros Hall ceilidh to Sandy MacAuley’s band on Wednesday night.
The Window-dressing competition is still enthusiastically pursued by Tobermory shop outlets with the aim of achieving the best display promoting Tennents West Highland Yachting Week. A silver trophy is presented to the ‘best dressed’ shop.
