TENNENTS West Highland Yachting Week running from July 31-August 7 this year is already attracting a stream of enquiries from competitors eager to participate in the 62nd event which is the last one sponsored by Tennent Caledonian Breweries.
Joint Regatta Secretary Julia Heap said there had been some skippers from down south and abroad looking to charter boats for the Week. In addition some competitors who have not taken part for many years are also showing interest in celebrating the 30th year of partnership with Tennents.
And with the added support of Tunnocks in 2009 and the input last year from EventScotland and Argyll and Bute Council all is set for another excellent event in Craobh, Oban and Tobermory.
The Notice of Race is now available on the WHYW website www.whyw.co.uk with the proposed Class decisions. However, Race Officer Malcolm MacGregor points out there can be a degree of flexibility on the divisions according to the number of yachts entered. This will be considered by the Joint Regatta Committee (JRC) closer to the event.
And the JRC is hoping to work closely with Oban Bay Marine when the new pontoons are installed between the North and South Piers in Oban. It is hoped these will be ready in time for the event allowing competitors another berthing option alongside Oban Marina and Dunstaffnage.
Meanwhile on the all important entertainment front there are plans for another excellent evening’s entertainment at the Lord of the Isles at Craobh Marina mirroring the event held on the opening night last year. Craobh Marina is already gearing up to welcome the fleet once again for the start of the event.
Also in the pipeline is entertainment at the Ceilidh House in Oban with Skippinish and a reception for yacht skippers aboard the Isle of Mull.
The final night’s prize giving dance will again take place in the Corran Halls with a headline ceilidh band to get the feet tapping. The full social programme will be announced shortly.
