TUNNOCKS is to add its name to the famed West Highland Yachting Week with a substantial funding package to help run the event. The partnership with the well known biscuit and teacake bakers will be for the 2009 event that runs from 31st July till 7th August and includes Tunnock's biscuit boxes, one to be gifted to each boat. Boyd Tunnock, managing director of the Tunnocks is a long time supporter of West Highland Yachting Week.
Dave Waltho, chairman of West Highland Yachting Week's Joint Regatta Committee added that the committee was delighted at the news. He said: ‘To have Tunnocks come in for West Highland Yachting Week is brilliant and we very much welcome Tunnocks aboard.’
West Highland Yachting Week is a unique event in the British yacht racing calendar designed to offer a mix of competitive racing to a wide range of entrants. The regatta attracts upwards of 130 yachts each August to the west coast of Scotland and is run from the ports of Craobh, Oban and Tobermory. It is a fun-filled spectacular event on land and sea estimated to contribute a conservative £600,000 to the economy of Argyll and Bute.
Feeder races from the Clyde, Gigha and Oban bring boats to Craobh Marina for the start of the event set against the backdrop of the stunning west coast scenery of Argyll and the Isles. Passage races take the fleet from Craobh to Oban and then on to Tobermory during the Week's regatta. From these iconic destinations the fleet enjoy either a day's racing 'round the cans' or, for the white sail classes, a short inshore race. When tides permit the Round Lismore race is an ever popular feature of this varied regatta.
With a range of nine classes mixing spinnaker and restricted sail, West Highland Week appeals to all ages and sailing abilities. As well as top class racing, competitors can enjoy an excellent apres-sail social programme to give a fun-filled week for all the family both on and off the water.
